Poet’s Way Extended Loop

This loop walk offers stunning views of the Sheep’s Head peninsula, the Beara peninsula to the north and the Mizen to the south. It combines parts of the Caher Loop , Cahergal Loop and The Poet’s Way.

Directions: Start at the Black Gate and Alice West's House, and head up the old road to the top of Caher, and cross the peninsula to Cahergal. Then you head into commonage, passing the Crimea, Gortavallig copper mine and the blowhole before arriving at the Cove. Take care near exposed cliffs near Gortavallig copper mine. A small detour will take you to The Poet's Way memorial, in memory of Denis M. Cronin and the O’Dalaighs. Returning to the main route, head along the north side, taking care near cliffs, to the Sheep’s Head Lighthouse and helicopter pad. Then head back east, passing Lough Akeen to the car park at Tooreen and Bernie's Cupán Tae cafe. The walk then heads up to the Signal Tower passing The Camp, and follows the old military road east. The walk then crosses the road and continues trough commonage, passing the Caherurlagh Marriage Stone before returning to the Black Gate.
