The Mealagh river runs gently through the Mealagh Valley for much of the year. However, heavy rain in the winter can bring massive floods and the river swells beyond its banks. During these violent floods trees are swept through the valley, so it was important that any structure crossing the river should be well above the water to allow flooding material to pass.
