Whiddy Island
This small island, approximately 4.8 km long & 1.6 km wide, lies in a sheltered position just offshore from Bantry town. Steeped in history, the island is easily explored on foot or by bicycle. Bird watching, fishing, wildlife, unspoiled natural beauty with spectacular scenery are amongst the attractions. Ancient and more recent historical sites on the island include an ecclesiastical enclosure, redoubts, a tower house and the remains of a WW1 air base. Whiddy is accessible by ferry from the main pier by the marina, where further information on the Island can be found on the local Mapboards.
