The Mass Path

The path runs from Dún Óir trailhead to Ahakista and intersects with the main Sheeps Head Way at the hilltop. Families from what is known locally as “The North Side” used this trail to attend Mass at the church in Ahakista on the south side of the Sheeps Head peninsula. Prior to the development of the road system and before motorised transport became widely available, most people travelled on foot to their local destinations. The frequently used path across fields and open land became well-worn and was easily followed even in the dark mornings and evenings of the winter months. Sunday shoes were often carried and only put on when nearing the Church door.
