Barnagowlane Wedge Tomb

This megalithic tomb is situated on a low hill 100m south of the Mealagh river. Wedge tombs typically date from the Bronze Age (approx. 3000-4000 years ago) and are named due to their wedge shape. The Barnagowlane West tomb opens to the southwest and is formed by a single capstone which rests on the sidestones and a closing stone at the eastern end, forming a burial chamber within. Although this tomb has not been excavated, wedge tombs have been found to contain both human bones and cremated human remains, often of several individuals. This is one of three known prehistoric burial sites in this area of the Mealagh valley. A second tomb, now deconstructed, was previously located at Coomleagh east. There are some stone remains at that site 2km east of the Barnagowlane tomb. A third wedge tomb site was only identified in the mid 1990s, it is on high ground 1.5km north west of the Barnagowlane site.
