Captain O’Neill’s Monument

Francis O'Neill was born in Trawlebane and was a major contributor to collecting and preserving traditional Irish music in the 19th and early 20th centuary. He led a full life, from escaping the priesthood, to being shipwrecked in the Pacific, ranching in Montana, to Chief of Police in Chicago. He recognised the devastation the Irish Famine had on Irish traditional music and spent his later years collecting and recording the music.
