Abbey Graveyard

Very little remains of the 14th century Franciscan Abbey known as Ard na mBrathar (the height of the brothers or monks). It was built for the Franciscan order on land given by Diarmuid O’Suilleabhain of the O’Sullivan Bere clan. The grounds that surrounded it are still in use as a burial place and are referred to as the Abbey Graveyard. The large Celtic Cross here was erected to the memory of famine victims, and is located in the townland of Abbey about 1.5km west of Bantry town on the N71.
